Additional Details

Esek Hopkins stands on the shoreline with sword in hand, while two American ships in the background fly patriotic banners: one a Gadsen flag (aka Hopkins flag since it was his personal standard on the flagship Alfred) showing a rattlesnake with the slogan Don't Tread on Me; the other a flag commonly used on American privateers depicting a liberty tree with the words An Appeal to God.
